In partnership with EWU’s literary festival, Get Lit!, Hamblen will host its first annual HPPC Reads! on Tuesday , April 3rd, 7:00 p.m., in the new Christian Ed room. Dr. Pam Parker, Professor of English at Whitworth University, will be facilitating a discussion of the book, Take This Bread: a Radical Conversion, by author Sara Miles. Take This Bread is not only a spiritual memoir but a call to action, the story of an unexpected and terribly inconvenient Christian conversion, told by a very unlikely convert. Raised as an atheist, Sara Miles lived an enthusiastically secular life as a restaurant cook and writer. Then early one morning, for no earthly reason, she wandered into a church. “I was certainly not interested in becoming a Christian,” she writes. “Or, as I thought of it rather less politely, a religious nut.” But she ate a piece of bread, took a sip of wine, and found herself radically transformed…. You can pick up your own copy of the book at Auntie’s bookstore, or it can be ordered online. You can read more about the author, Sara Miles, at her website: http://saramiles.net/books_and_articles
Please join us for an evening of literary conversation. Contact Andrea Reid with any questions (greyareaissues@yahoo.com or 448-4033).

Cup of Cool Water is a faith-based group that offers food, clothing and assistance to teens and young adults who are trying to live on their own.The first Monday of each month, HPPC members help these kids by providing sack lunches and milk for them. I have a list of contacts and I call five from that list each month to ask that they each provide five sack lunches, mark them “Cup of Cool Water,” and place them in the church refrigerator by noon on the day specified. You will only be called once, perhaps twice, a year to help. If it is not convenient on the month I call you, you can always select another month. Any time you participate is greatly appreciated! The five lunches you prepare consist of a nutritious sandwich, fruit (an orange or apple), cookies, chips, pretzels, carrots or celery sticks, etc. If you wish to add your name to my contact list, please call Bea Pierce (747-6447) or email shebagirl@comcast.net Many thanks to all who volunteer to provide these lunches. Special thanks to Joe Correia for furnishing a crate of individual cartons of milk each month, and to Barb Kuuskvere and LuAnn Bray who take turns delivering the lunches and milk. – Bea Pierce, HPPC Coordinator, Cup of Cool Water
You, TOO, Can Speak the Word! Serve as a Worship Lay Assistant — Have you thought about signing up to be a Lay Assistant but hesitated because you weren’t sure or were fearful about what you would have to do – or say – or pray? Old and new lay assistants are invited to a brief orientation session where you will gain confidence and practical resources for reading scripture and praying in worship. This orientation will be held in the Sanctuary after the 10:30 service on Sunday, April 15. Readers of all ages, including children and youth, are encouraged to attend. Additionally, the Worship Committee has put together a “Lay Assistant Guide” booklet that will hopefully answer some questions and put some fears to rest. This booklet is located next to the Lay Assistant sign-up sheet in the Narthex, and even if you don’t plan to sign up, you’re welcome to take one and look it over.

Two Adult Mission Trips are currently being planned for 2012!
1. One trip will be to Orofino, Idaho. We will join with the Northfork Presbyterian Church on the Nez Perce reservation for improving their social hall, upgrading the steps, building a roof over the steps, and building a roof over the wheelchair ramp. This trip will probably be in late June or late August.
2. The second mission trip will be to Alamosa, Colorado, where we will partner with La Puente. La Puente ministers to the homeless and to low income families in the San Luis Valley. Our work will include a variety of opportunities such as serving in the kitchen at the shelter and helping with minor home repair or yard work. This trip will happen in early autumn, most likely September 22-29. The estimated cost is approximately $400 per person.
If you are interested in either or both of these trips, please contact Pastor Brad (990-4993) to let him know of your interest.
Advance Notice! Possible Mission Trip to Israel in early 2013! — Pastor Ken is planning a trip to Israel in February or March of 2013. He is hoping to take a number of people from Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church with him. In addition to visiting Biblical sites, this trip will also include several days helping at the MEEI Schools. These schools, founded by Father Elias Chacour, educate young people in the ways of peace, reconciliation, respect, and justice. Please contact Pastor Brad or Pastor Ken for more information about this trip.
